Antique Louis XV-era Silk Spool Wheel, Gilded Bronze And Turned Mahogany, With A
Rare Louis XV-era silk reel, made of gilded bronze and turned mahogany.
Beneath the reel is a fragmentary paper label, part of which reads “Cuny, turner to Madame la Dauphine [...] inventor of gilded copper spinning wheels...,” presumably Nicolas Cuny, a master turner whose workshop is documented on Rue Charenton in Paris by a notarial deed dated October 12, 1750 (National Archives of Paris, accession number MC/ET/XXVIII/319).
Bibliography: A spool holder of the same type appears in Pierre Verlet’s book *Les bronzes dorés français du XVIIIe siècle* (French Gilded Bronzes of the 18th Century), 3rd edition, 2003, p. 147, fig. 187. A very similar example appeared in 2015 at the Château d’Hauteville auction (Switzerland) in Geneva, Piguet (lot no. 1122).
Dimensions: plateau : 42 x 16,5 cm ; hauteur : 28 cm
Note: the spindle is missing; some parts are detached; there are small chips.
