Portrait of Pierre Aguétant (Guéreins 1890 – Orléans, 1940)
Black-patinated plaster
H. 62 cm
Signed and dated: F Dumas / 1924
Exhibition: Société Lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts, 1924, entry no. 779: Bust of the poet P. A.
Pierre Aguétant was an important poet and novelist in the 1920s and 1930s. Born in the Ain department, he was deeply attached to his native region, situated on both sides of the Saône River: the Bugey on one side, and the Beaujolais—where he lived for many years in Jullié—on the other. Several of his works celebrate his region, notably Le Poème du Bugey (1918) and Le Poème du Beaujolais (1922). The latter was inspired by his walks in Jullié and the surrounding area. His novel, Les Noces de la terre et de l'amour (1924), is also set in Jullié. Aguétant was connected to many artists from Lyon, including the painters Eugène Brouillard, Honoré Hugrel, Johannès Son, and Pierre Combet-Descombes. Son illustrated *Le Poème du Bugey*, while Brouillard illustrated *Le Poème du Beaujolais*. This portrait of Aguétant, created by the Lyon sculptor Félix Dumas, was exhibited at the Salon de Lyon in 1924. Dressed in a suit and tie superbly sculpted by Dumas, Aguétant looks relatively young (he was 34) while exuding a maturity marked by seriousness.
Félix Dumas, born in Lyon and a student of the sculptor Thomas Lamotte, regularly exhibited his sculptures at the salons in Lyon and Paris from 1900 to 1945. He won an award in Paris in 1908. His works rarely appear on the art market; however, his figures and monuments are numerous in the churches and public spaces of Lyon and the surrounding region. Dumas was a close friend of Aguétant. In 1923, the year before this bust was created, he designed the war memorial in Jullié, on which verses by Aguétant are engraved. Correspondence between Dumas and Aguétant regarding this bust exists and is housed in the Jullié municipal archives, which have since been transferred to the Lyon Archives.
