Circle of Guido Reni, “Saint Sebastian,” 17th century
Oil on canvas. 134 x 99.50 cm.
Framed.
This work depicts Saint Sebastian and is stylistically linked to the model by the Italian painter Guido Reni (Saint Sebastian)—a motif widely disseminated through various versions, such as those housed at the Prado Museum, the Louvre, and the Gallerie dell’Accademia—as well as to interpretations by the 17th-century Emilian or Neapolitan Baroque schools.
Saint Sebastian, a Christian martyr and officer of the Roman Guard, is depicted tied to a tree trunk or a post and pierced by the arrows of his martyrdom.
Baroque style, characterized by a dramatic use of light and shadow (chiaroscuro), the gaze turned toward the sky, and an idealized depiction of the saint’s anatomy.
Good condition.
