Crystal Pitcher With Silver, 13th Artel, Russia, Moscow, Early 20th Century

An elegant crystal pitcher with a silver mount, a remarkable example of the high level achieved by Russian decorative and applied arts in the early 20th century. The work reflects a subtle and thoughtful reinterpretation of historical Western European styles, characteristic of Moscow’s late-Historicism silversmith workshops. The composition combines classical-inspired precision with decorative finesse drawing on references to the early French Renaissance.

The proportionally flared body, crafted from transparent crystal, is richly decorated with deep cuts featuring diamond and plant motifs, creating a refined play of light while emphasizing the vessel’s functional purpose. The silver neck, treated with restraint, is adorned with classical garlands that appear to hang along the lower edge, lending the piece an architectural clarity and ceremonial dignity. A Renaissance-inspired ornamental frieze along the rim harmonizes beautifully with the handle’s supple lines, which are subtly influenced by the aesthetic of the transition to modernity.

A special touch is provided by the garnet lid knob—an elegant detail steeped in symbolism, evoking fertility, flourishing, and abundance, central themes of Renaissance iconography. This delicate artistic touch reinforces the pitcher’s association with the ceremonial table and festive beverages such as cherry juice, punch, or red wine. The object should be viewed not merely as a utilitarian item, but as a standalone work of art, designed for a celebratory setting.
