18th-century Venetian Rococo Console Table, Circa 1750
Rococo console table
Carved and painted wood. Features a modern glass top
Venice, circa 1750
Height 89 cm, width 134 cm, depth 51 cm
Venetian console table in carved wood, painted in a delicate shade of sea green and embellished with abundant gilded details. It is characterized by a sinuous front and four tall legs with pronounced curves, richly carved with volutes, leaves, and plant motifs that visually extend toward the apron. The openwork tabletop, with its asymmetrical design, unfolds into a dynamic interplay of volutes and plant motifs, centered around a large ornament with undulating forms. The contrast between the painted surface and the golden highlights emphasizes the depth of the carving and highlights the piece’s sculptural character. The top follows the jagged, undulating contour of the structure and features a marbled surface in shades of ochre, reddish, and greenish tones, currently protected by a recently added glass top. The piece stands out for the exceptional quality of its craftsmanship, evident in the depth and fluidity of the carving, the richness of its ornamental repertoire, and the careful preservation of the painted surface. It is also in very good condition, retaining remarkable integrity both structurally and decoratively.
The composition reflects the Rococo style’s characteristic taste for movement, asymmetry, and forms inspired by nature. The legs abandon any rigid architectural appearance in favor of undulating profiles that seem to blend into the sculpted volutes and leaves, while the openwork apron visually lightens the entire composition. The use of green combined with gilding further enhances this effect, with the highlighted elements functioning almost as an ornamental layer that extends across the entire structure and unifies it. Rather than being organized as a succession of independent elements, the decoration appears to unfold continuously across the entire surface, integrating the base and the ornamentation into a single composition. This approach is particularly well-suited to a console table—a piece of furniture designed to be placed against a wall, whose rich decoration actively contributed to the character of the interior.
This console table dates from one of the most flourishing periods of Italian Rococo. In 18th-century Venetian furniture, sinuous silhouettes, exuberant carvings, and painted and gilded finishes took on particular importance, lending themselves especially well to the luminous and sumptuous interiors of the city’s palaces. In contrast to a strictly architectural approach to furniture design, the Rococo style favored structures of great visual dynamism, in which curves, counter-curves, and plant motifs blurred the boundaries between the various elements. The exceptional quality of the carving on this piece, combined with the complexity of its design and its excellent state of preservation, illustrates in a particularly striking way the refinement achieved by this type of Venetian furniture in the mid-18th century.
