19th-century Winfield Rocking Chair, England, Iron And Linen

Artist: Peter Cooper

Wrought iron and linen upholstery

England, circa 1850

Height 106 cm, width 59 cm, depth 106 cm

The Winfield rocking chair consists of a continuous wrought-iron frame that forms the characteristic elliptical side arches and the curved legs that allow it to rock. The seat and backrest are made from a single piece of stretched linen, complemented by armrests in the same material. The design, with its fluid lines and exposed frame, creates a light, elongated silhouette, in which the leather insert defines the overall ergonomic design. The frame retains its patina, while the oat-colored linen features a smooth surface and visible seams, reinforced to maintain tension.

Made in England around 1850, this rocking chair combines hand-forged iron and leather sewn by hand using traditional methods. The linen has recently been refurbished using manual techniques faithful to the original 19th-century design, including cutting, perforation, double stitching, and gentle mechanical tensioning to ensure the continuity of its curve. This restoration adds padding to the armrests as well as to the lower section where the seat folds under the legs, while maintaining the model’s historical ergonomics and providing additional comfort without altering its original character. The wrought iron provides rigidity and controlled elasticity, while the taut yet supple linen serves as a seating surface for the user.

Designed by Peter Cooper, the Winfield rocking chair was first presented at the Great Exhibitionin London in 1851, which celebrated industrial innovations and the applied arts. It was designed as a piece of country furniture: sturdy, easily transportable, and intended to provide a moment of rest during long journeys. This piece embodies the spirit of mid-19th-century English furniture: military functionality, experimentation with wrought-iron structures, and a proto-industrial aesthetic that foreshadows later utilitarian design. Combining visual lightness, artisanal craftsmanship, and fine materials, it stands as a striking example of Victorian country furniture and a direct precursor to modern design that blends metal and leather. It is distinguished by its balance of portability, innovative design, and technical elegance.
