Limoges Porcelain Vase By Gauthier Atelier D’art, 1927, Art Deco
Artist: à Gauthier
Limoges porcelain vase; there is a number on the bottom of the vase. Probably a prototype? Porcelain pieces from around 1900 with the same signature, “A Gautier,” can also be found in Limoges. The manufacturer’s mark: The green circular stamp on the left bears the inscription “ATELIER D’ART.” The painted monogram: In the center, the large, hand-painted “AD” initials replicate the official monogram of the Atelier d’Art.The year 1927 is written out in full with a brush. This places the piece squarely in the heart of the pivotal Art Deco period, just two years after the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris (1925). The repetitive geometric pattern of semicircles, scales, and black broken lines is typical of the graphic vocabulary of the 1920s.The combination of earth tones (brown, beige) accented with black against the white porcelain reflects the pursuit of elegance and simplicity characteristic of the Ateliers d’Art de Limoges.
