Pair Of Views Of Canton By Nam Cheong (chinese, Active 1840–1870), Studio Of
Artist: Nam Cheong, Atelier De
A pair of signed views of Canton: *The Nine-Story Pagoda at Whampoa* and *The Entrance to a Temple by the Water (Pearl River)*. These two paintings were created around the mid-19th century in the studio of the famous Chinese painter Nam Cheong (active between 1845 and 1870).
Nam Cheong is one of the few identified Chinese painters known to have worked for the European market. In the mid-19th century, this artist likely had a studio in Whampoa (near Hong Kong) and rarely signed his works. These two paintings can be attributed to him or to a member of his studio. Both works were painted on the fine canvas characteristic of the period; they are in near-original condition and show no significant cracking.
In fact, many of his paintings depict the Whampoa Pagoda and its surrounding area. On the international art market, his paintings can fetch prices in the range of 8,000 euros.
