19th-century Louis XVI Portal Clock
This piece is a Louis XVI-style portico clock, made primarily of white marble (or alabaster) and featuring gilded, chiseled bronze ornamentation.
Details of the clock
- Architecture: Classic “columned” or “portico” design. The central cylindrical movement is suspended and framed by two large, tapered marble columns. The entire piece rests on an oblong base topped by an openwork bronze balustrade.
- Ornamentation: Features draped gilded bronze chains connecting the columns, fire pots (or damping vases) at the top, and a central covered vase crowning the movement. The dial is white enamel with Arabic numerals for the hours and an outer minute track.
- Mechanism: The rear view shows a classic round “Paris-style” movement with its silver-plated or bronze striking bell, its external counting wheel (which regulates the half-hours), and its suspension.
- Louis XVI (18th century): the pendulum is suspended by a simple silk thread (visible here but typical), and the gilding on the bronze is original mercury gilding.
- Louis XVI style (19th century – Napoleon III): high-quality clocks were produced in the second half of the 19th century.
