Bourgeois-aine Photo-painting Set, Circa 1898
Mahogany box set complete with paints and accessories for photo-painting.
This box set contains tubes of paint and numerous accessories.
The top panel features two "Before/After" examples of photo-painting retouching.
Inside, there are compartments for bottles of glue or varnish, as well as a roll of paper. The paint tubes are stored beneath the palette.
A Photo-Hall treatise on painting dating from 1898 is inserted between the palette and the wooden panel containing the two photographs.
In 1867, Joseph BOURGEOIS-AÎNE opened a paint store in Paris as well as a factory in Montreuil, where he manufactured the first so-called “non-hazardous” paints intended for art schools.
Later, he would offer his paints for retouching in photography.
