Sakieh near the Pyramids of Giza.

The famous Great Pyramids stand in the background, framing an imposing structure of "norias" (paddlewheels called Sekieh in Egypt and used for irrigation since ancient times).

The reflective surface of the water in the foreground, reflecting parts of the norias and the figures, adds depth and an artistic touch to the composition.

Anton Wilhelm Hammerschmidt (1822-1869) was a German photographer known for his work in Egypt.

He settled in Cairo, Egypt, around 1860. There he founded the Hammerschmidt store, where he sold photographic equipment to other pioneers of photography, such as Henry Cammas.

Hammerschmidt exhibited ten views of Egypt at the Société française de photographie in 1861 before becoming a member the following year. He also presented numerous ethnographic photographs of daily life at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1867.
