The Three Pyramids and the Nile, Egypt
Along the Nile, camels and local figures can be seen drinking water or resting in the shade of palm trees, while the three pyramids rise in the distance.
In 1865, the three pyramids—Cheops, Khafre, and Menkaure—were the most iconic monuments of ancient Egypt, attracting travelers and archaeologists from around the world.
Hippolyte Arnoux (active between 1860 and 1891) was a French photographer and publisher, a major figure in 19th-century photography in Egypt. He settled in Cairo in the 1860s and later moved to Port Said.
His most notable work is his comprehensive photographic coverage of the construction of the Suez Canal. At the same time, Arnoux documented ancient monuments, landscapes, and daily life in Egypt, particularly in Cairo and Port Said.
His work, which was both commercial and documentary in nature, helped popularize the image of Egypt and the Middle East in the late 19th century.
