This model was created for the Beatles’ visit to Tokyo in 1965 during a tour. Our copy appears to be a slightly smaller version than the one in the photo. In this image, the Beatles are accompanied by Sir Joseph Lockwood, Chairman of EMI Records England.

Master Watanabe, Masao | 1917–2007
Born in the town of Funehiki, Fukushima Prefecture, in 1917 -
He was one of the most popular and prolific Sosaku Kokeshi artists (creative kokeshis, as opposed to traditional kokeshis) of the 20th century. He began his career in the early 1950s. He is famous for his minimalism and use of lacquered surfaces, which lend his dolls a precious and refined quality. According to him, his dolls’ faces depicted the universal theme of “innocence” (Mushin). His work is on permanent display at the Nuremberg Toy Museum. His dolls won the Prime Minister’s Award in 1963.
