Oni Demon Mask - Japan 1930-50 #988
Painted wooden mask - some signs of handling, chips to the chin, nose, and right cheek. Various traces of old fastenings on the reverse. This mask is of the "Oni Mono" type, corresponding to the "ki" sequence of a play (featuring deity, man, woman, and demon). This sequence is performed in the fifth position. The demon's distressed expression suggests he has just been driven out. Work from the early Showa period (1930-50). With its sculpted volumes, this mask demonstrates the artistry of a sculptor.
