Bust Of Bhairava, Wood, Nepal, 17th Century
Fragment of a Newar sculpture from the late Malla period (XVIIᵉ-XVIIIᵉ century) extracted from an architectural ensemble, from the Kathmandu Valley.
Representation of Bhairava (or Bairava), a Hindu deity associated with a terrifying form of Shiva. Finesse of detail, repetition of circular motifs, very dense crown, well-carved jewels, subtle Hindu-Buddhist expression, subtly rounded cheeks, finely asymmetrical mouth, depth of relief, calm but lively gaze, the large ear discs, multi-register tiara and beaded ornaments correspond well to the Newar decorative vocabulary. The third eye in the forehead is a very strong element in favor of an identification linked to Shiva/Bhairava.
Remains of polychromy can be seen in places.
