Biography: Abraham Willemsens (died in Antwerp in 1672). Details about his early life, such as his date and place of birth, are unknown. In 1627–1628, he was registered in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke as a student of Gilliam Antonissens (also known as Guillaume Anthoni), a French painter active in Antwerp. In 1645, he was elected dean of the Guild. He was registered in Paris that same year. It is believed that he ran a large workshop with a high output to supply the export market. A large number of his paintings are located in Spain. He was listed in the records of the prominent Antwerp art dealer Guillam Forchondt in 1669 and also worked for the art dealer Matthijs Musson. He was an art dealer himself. He had two apprentices, in 1651–52 and 1654–55, respectively. The painter was virtually unknown until the discovery in the early 1990s of a painting bearing his full signature. Since then, his body of work has gradually been pieced together. In response to the demands of the time, Willemsens and his studio produced a number of copies of Rubens’s work. Along with Pieter van Lint and Willem van Herp, Willemsens was one of the leading producers of such copies for Antwerp art dealers.
