“madonna” By Guido Cacciapuoti (naples 1892 – Milan 1953)

Artist: Guido Cacciapuoti (naples 1892 – Milan 1953)
A polychrome ceramic high-relief plaque depicting the Virgin in prayer, by the Italian artist Guido Cacciapuoti. In the Art Deco style, circa 1925–1935 (the highest quality and most sought-after period of its production), this Madonna combines highly refined lines with rich enameling and gold highlights on her cloak, which features a floral tapestry pattern. Signed in intaglio on the base.
On the back of the piece, the original label reads “Ceramiche Grès d’Arte” and bears the handwritten cursive signature of Guido Cacciapuoti (Naples 1892 – Milan 1953), one of the most famous Italian master ceramicists of the 20th century. The handwritten number corresponds to the reference for this Madonna model in his manufacturer’s catalog.

Guido Cacciapuoti (Naples, 1892 – Milan, 1953) was one of the great Italian ceramic artists of the first half of the 20th century. Born into a prominent family of ceramicists, he specialized early on in depicting animals and female figures. He exhibited, notably, at the Venice Biennale in 1920.
His works are characterized by a masterful simplification of form combined with a particularly sensitive observation of his subjects. Several of his creations found their way into prestigious collections, notably those of Victor Emmanuel III and King George VI.
