Paul Smarov (Russian: Павел Дмитриевич Шмыров, Pavel Dmitrievitch Chmyrov) was a Russian painter, born on September 22, 1874, in Voronezh and died on July 2, 1950, in Boulogne-Billancourt. In 1923, amidst political instability, Smarov left Russia permanently and settled in Rome, before moving to Paris in December 1924. There, he quickly found his place in Russian artistic circles in exile, while continuing his career in France. In 1928, he held his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Charpentier in Paris, and around the same time participated in the Russian Art Exhibition in Brussels. He expressed his attachment to his homeland through a series of genre scenes depicting peasant life, which enjoyed great success in Parisian exhibitions during the mid-20th century. His canvases are characterized by a unique style, with broad, dense lines, sophisticated colors, and a celebration of the beauty of Slavic women. Smarov possessed a keen sense of color and exceptional mastery of oil painting, creating a dazzling symphony of hues. He imbued his work with a peaceful atmosphere where femininity and Impressionist influence blend seamlessly.
