Late 18th-Century Cubic Foot Warmer
– Pierced Dutch Brassware with Floral Decoration
Cubic carriage foot warmer made of brass, with a slightly domed, pierced top engraved of floral decoration and fitted with a movable carrying handle.
The four sides share the same design and are worked in repoussé, each featuring a large convex central boss with a mirror-like effect, surrounded by beaded borders and tulip motifs.
One side opens by means of abutterfly-shaped ring, allowing a removable iron container filled with hot embers to be inserted. This inner container is now missing.
The bears a lightly engraved inscription, apparently comprising the initials of a former owner together with the date 1797.
Dimensions: 19 × 19 × 16 cm.
Foot warmers of this type were used during the 18th century, notably in coaches and carriages, as well as during lengthy church services.
Condition: good overall condition considering its age. The underside is missing the four ball feet originally positioned at the corners, and one corner is torn, as shown in the photographs. An attractive period object with particularly appealing decorative work.
Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.
This object is for immediate purchase, payable by credit card or paypal.
