a decorative element, due to its large size, its wooden frame and the beauty of the antique characters,
Art edition from end of 19th century, "plaster of Paris", the skilled modelers worked a lot at period, and their works were exported well to United States. Find condition, good condition, part of the arm of far left character is missing (perhaps?) ...
