Carved, Gilded Wooden Rustic Trophy – 18th Century
A charming little 18th-century decorative piece made of carved, openwork, gilded, and polychrome wood, depicting a rustic trophy.
The composition centers on a basket filled with fruit, including an open pomegranate, surrounded by abundant foliage. Gardening tools, notably a spade and a rake, are incorporated into the composition, lending it its rustic character.
Despite its small size, the sculpture is particularly lively: the various elements are carved in relief and extensively openwork, creating a beautiful sense of depth.
The ornament retains its original gilding and polychromy, in shades of gold, red, and ochre, with wear and minor losses due to its age.
The reverse side, left unfinished, retains traces of the carving process as well as numerous holes made by ancient wood-boring insects. A ring now allows the piece to be easily displayed on a wall.
