Bronze with a reddish-brown patina – 1929 – Signed “Seybo” – some minor wear.
Accompanied by a subscription purchase document dated 1929.
The artist: Born in Nagasaki. Graduated in 1907 from the Kyoto Municipal University of Arts. He began sculpting full-time after completing his military service in 1915 and was appointed professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1921. He became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1925. The Taisho period (1912–26) saw his rise to prominence, marked by numerous awards and official commissions. His style is powerful, with the human form prominently featured. It shows a strong influence from the art of Rodin.In 1931, he decorated the central hall of the National Diet. After 1945, he retired and created a series of monumental sculptures depicting demons and the damned. The most famous is the 10-meter-tall statue in Nagasaki’s Peace Park (1958). The emperor even traveled there in person to visit it. An illustrated and detailed biography and a certificate will be provided to the buyer.
