Pair Of Gilded Bronze Candlesticks From The Empire Period, Marked "pierre Chiboust" (1779–1824)

Artist: Pierre Chiboust

The base is a turned plinth supported by three lion’s paws decorated with acanthus leaves, surmounted by a small, flared pedestal with foliage motifs, supporting a fluted sphere, followed once again by acanthus foliage motifs.

The central shaft is fluted and banded; the upper portion is adorned with a design of flowers and finely chiseled plant motifs, from which a wreath of flowers springs forth.

Finally, the Binet, topped with its original finials, resembles the trunk of a palm tree.

An elegant piece crafted from bronze gilded with matte mercury and burnished with agate, composed of twelve elements—a mark of high quality—and in exceptional condition, entirely original.
They have only been cleaned by our bronze specialist.

Pierre Chiboust
(sometimes spelled Chiboust)
a leading French art bronze artist of the Empire period, born in 1779 and died in 1824.
Active in Paris in the early 19th century, his major productive period spanned 1806 to 1824.
His work is distinguished by the high quality of his chasing and gilding, typical of the decorative arts under Napoleon I.
In 1806, Pierre Chiboust went into partnership with the famous foundryman and chaser Claude François Rabiat.
Upon Rabiat’s death in 1815, Chiboust took full charge of his Parisian workshop.
He is primarily known for his lighting fixtures and fine decorative objects. The art market still features remarkable pieces by him, such as a pair of palmette-decorated wall sconces, signed incense burners, Medici vases, and prestigious Empire-era candelabras and torches, some of which are inspired by the designs of the famous architects, Percier and Fontaine.
