Fang Byeri Statue, Reliquary Guardian, Gabon, N'tumu
Stunning Fang statue from Gabon, in the N'Tumu style, 57 and 61 cm tall including the black wooden base. Some wear and tear, signs of impact....significant dark, oily patina from use; note that there is much less ceremonial material on the legs, so the statue must have worn a loincloth; beautiful, long glass bead necklaces; also note the hump on the back—hunchbacks in Africa are both feared and revered, and are believed to possess magical powers.
A few nails are missing from the forehead; I could possibly add some, even though in theory one should leave the object as is!
Antique statue, probably from the early 20th century.
