Pair Of Painted Metal Plates With Religious Motifs Depicting St. Catherine And St. Nicholas
This masterful work is fully in keeping with the late 19th-century movement toward the revival of sacred art and the troubadour aesthetic.
Measuring 111.5 cm high by 48.5 cm wide, each panel features a curved, multi-lobed shape at the top, evoking the architecture of medieval altarpieces.
The first panel depicts Saint Catherine of Alexandria, identifiable by her meticulously rendered traditional attributes.
The saint wears a gold and silver crown set against an immaculate white veil that frames a face of great pictorial gentleness, rendered with striking academic realism.
She holds firmly in her hands the broken cogwheel from her torture as well as a golden palm of martyrdom.
Her figure is clad in a draped sea-green cloak opening over a pink gown embellished with a central braid richly adorned with cabochons and precious geometric motifs.
On either side of the figure, the Gothic inscription “S. CATHARINA” and the liturgical phrase “ORA PRO NOBIS” (Pray for us) provide vertical structure to the composition.
The second panel depicts Saint Nicholas, dressed in a bishop’s liturgical vestments, wearing a miter, and brandishing a twisted, gilded episcopal crozier.
The saint is depicted with his traditional long white beard, his gaze turned toward heaven, clad in a purple cope over a
green alb.
At his feet, the composition incorporates one of his most famous miracles: the depiction of three small children emerging from the salt barrel, painted with realistic, angelic expressions.
The vertical inscription “S. NICOLAUS” completes the counterpart of this bilateral work. The background of both plaques features a richly crafted gold field, adorned with neo-Gothic arabesques and foliage motifs, lending immense luminosity to the entire composition.
The reverse side of the metal plates reveals the raw grain of the period material and retains its original wire-hanging system. This pair of plaques bears a significant historical inscription engraved into the metal at the bottom left: “ALB. POLART ET MONDINEU - 1899 .”
This signature attests to the exclusive collaboration between Albert-Jean Polart (1869–1947) and Jean Mondineu, two painters and brilliant design artists of the late Victorian era.
Renowned for their sacred compositions, they provided numerous artist’s sketches for renowned master glassmakers such as Félix Gaudin and the Latteux-Bazin studio.
Their expertise as illustrators is masterfully displayed here on the rare medium of painted sheet metal, offering a graphic finesse worthy of the finest stained-glass windows of the 1900s.
