Antique Crucifix, Holy Water Stoup, In Silver, 19th Century Naples
This object is an antique 19th-century wall-mounted crucifix/holy water stoup, made in Neapolitan silver with unidentified marks. The central cross is made of ebonized wood (or stained black to imitate ebony). The body of Christ (the Corpus), the upper scroll with the inscription "INRI," the decorative terminals of the cross (chants), the sunburst, and the lower holy water basin are made of embossed and cast silver. Beneath Jesus' feet is the classic symbol of the skull and crossbones, representing Golgotha (the place of the skull) and Christ's victory over death.
