Antique Oil Painting On Canvas Dated 1605 - Tuscan School - San Luigi Gonzaga
Artist: Bartolomeo Gessi
Antique oil on canvas. This painting depicts Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, patron saint of youth, identifiable by his cassock and the cross he holds.
Tuscan School (Sienese). The author's name is inscribed on the back, "Bartolomeo Gessi," school of G. Manetti.
Certainly a pupil of G. Manetti.
The painting is dated 1605. After his early death, the iconography spread rapidly, often depicting him with the lily (symbol of purity) and the crucifix, or receiving his vocation. Numerous depictions, including Roman paintings from the first half of the 17th century, portray him with symbolic elements such as the crown (renounced for religious life) and the Madonna. We know that the saint died in 1591 at the age of just 23, and was canonized in 1726, so the painting is very interesting as it is one of the first depictions of the saint.
The work is on its first canvas, never restored, with small paint losses -
measures 67 cm x 54.5 cm
