Inlaid Panel, Inlaid Frame, Early 1900s, Italy, *the Marriage Of The Virgin* By Raphael
This object is a decorative panel made of wood inlay (tarsia lignea) using various types of wood, which faithfully reproduces one of the most famous works of the Italian Renaissance: Raphael Sanzio’s *The Marriage of the Virgin*.The main scene depicts the marriage of Mary and Joseph, officiated by the high priest in the center. In the background stands the iconic central-plan temple with the famous geometric perspective typical of Raphael’s original 1504 painting (now housed at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan). This is a fine work of cabinetmaking and marquetry, in which woods of different species, shades, and grains have been cut and arranged to create nuances, shading, and three-dimensional depth, without the use of paint. Frame and Details: The panel is set within a rich geometric frame, decorated with herringbone inlays, leaf motifs engraved in the corners on thin metal sheets, and inserts with blue-colored gemstones that enhance its aesthetic appeal.Decorative panels of this type are typical of Italian artistic craftsmanship (with significant historical traditions in regions such as Lombardy, Veneto, or Tuscany) and are generally dated between the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, a period when master cabinetmakers loved to reproduce the great masterpieces of the Renaissance on furniture or wall panels.
