Spanish School 16th Century – Beheading Of Saint John The Baptist, Renaissance Panel
Artist: école Espagnole Xvie
SPANISH SCHOOL, FIRST HALF OF THE 16TH CENTURY
THE BEHEADING OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST
First half of the 16th century
Oil on chestnut panel, composed of two joined boards, reinforced on the reverse 92.5 × 69.2 cm / 36.4 × 27.2 inches
Unframed
This early Spanish Renaissance panel blends Castilian devotion with the raw expression of Northern European art. This stylistic fusion is clearly visible in the painting’s visual language. While the late Gothic tradition shapes the figure of Saint John—depicted in prayerful submission with a slender reed cross—the group of executioners on the left reflects a newer artistic approach. With their exaggerated, sharp features, dynamic poses, and a heavy raised sword, these figures closely echo the style of German and Netherlandish Renaissance prints that circulated widely in Spain during this period.
