Sheffield 1926 – Openwork Basket In 925/1000 Sterling Silver
Sheffield 1926 – Openwork basket in solid silver
Basket in 925-th solid silver, made in Sheffield in 1926.
Oval in shape, this basket features extensive openwork throughout its frame. The sides are punctuated by long vertical openings, arranged at regular intervals and connected at the bottom by a geometric pattern. They are framed at the top and bottom by openwork friezes decorated with stylized scrolls.
The upper rim, cut in a slightly undulating pattern, follows the shape of the basket and curves upward at the ends to accommodate the two side handles. The solid, oval-shaped bottom contrasts with the visual lightness of the openwork sides.
The piece rests on four legs, crafted as an extension of the overall design. The construction is particularly substantial for this type of piece, weighing 526 grams, attesting to the high quality of craftsmanship.
A typical English basket characteristic of Sheffield silversmithing from the first quarter of the 20th century, combining a generously openwork structure with a prominent use of silver.
