Mappin & Webb Sauce Boat Set — Sterling Silver Stand With Silver-plated Sauce Boat And Ladle
A fine three-piece sauce service by Mappin & Webb, the celebrated English silversmiths, presented in their original M&W-monogrammed black leatherette case with burgundy velvet interior. The set comprises an oval stand, a matching boat-form sauce boat, and a small ladle, all in the Georgian taste with gadrooned borders. The oval stand is sterling silver (.925), while the sauce boat and ladle are silver-plated — please note this distinction. The sauce boat is of classical helmet form raised on three shell-capped scroll feet terminating in hoof-like pads, with a high scrolling double-curl handle and a lipped pouring spout, the rim chased throughout with a crisp gadrooned edge; the conforming oval stand repeats the gadrooned border, providing a unified service. The stand bears full Sheffield hallmarks to the underside: crowned rose (Sheffield assay office), lion passant (sterling standard), date letter "a" for 2000, the "925" fineness mark, and the "M&W" maker's punch for Mappin & Webb. The ladle is stamped "MAPPIN & WEBB PLATE" to the back of the stem. Dimensions: stand — length 20.5 cm, width 14.1 cm, height 1.7 cm, weight 198.9 g (sterling); sauce boat — length 20.5 cm, width 10 cm, height 10.5 cm, weight 313 g (plated); ladle — length 15.5 cm, weight 54 g (plated). Mint condition throughout, retaining a high mirror polish with no dents, repairs, or losses; a rare and desirable cased set from one of Britain's most prestigious silver houses, fittingly hallmarked at Sheffield — Mappin & Webb's historic home. Please carefully regard all photos as they make an integral part of the listing, and reach out if there are any questions.
