Post-impressionist Painting. Riverside Landscape. Dumoutier (pseudonym Eugène Galien-laloue)

Oil on canvas dating from the late 19th or very early 20th century, depicting a rural landscape in a Post-Impressionist style, strongly influenced by the Barbizon School.

The particularly well-balanced composition features a traditional thatched cottage nestled on the banks of the water. A first figure animates the towpath in the foreground, while a second figure is seen mooring a boat along the riverbank, the entire scene bathed in the soft light of late afternoon.

The work is signed “Dumoutier” lower right. This is one of the documented pseudonyms used by the celebrated Parisian painter Eugène Galien-Laloue.

The artist used various pseudonyms, including Dumoutier, Dupuy and Liévin, in order to produce and sell his rural landscapes independently, thereby circumventing the strict exclusivity agreements he had signed with major Parisian galleries for his famous views of Paris.

The painting is in excellent original condition, with a generous impasto and beautiful, fresh colours. It has undergone no aggressive cleaning, decorative overpainting or restoration.

The reverse of the canvas is clean and sound, with no patches or relining. The stretcher bears old handwritten annotations in pencil on the reverse.

The painting is presented in a very fine period carved wooden frame in the Louis XIV style, featuring a superb original cerused and whitened patina.
