Constantin, Jean Antoine. The Ink Notice
Artist: Constantin Jean Antoine
Ink wash by Constantin Jean Antoine (1756–1844). Born in Marseille. He studied under Kepeller the Elder and David. He moved to Rome and studied under Vien. The Revolution forced him to step down as director of the drawing school in Aix-en-Provence. He was a talented draftsman and watercolorist. His influence on the Provençal school was considerable.
Given the painter’s Provençal origins, our animated landscape (a bandit attack)
must be set in the south of France or perhaps in Italy, where he spent a long time.
This ink sketch is unsigned, but the following information is written on the back: “Collection of Mr. Charles Tardieu, donated by him.” Drawing by Jean Antoine Contantin of Aix-en-Provence. Born in Marseille in 1756; died in Provence in 1844.)
