Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Philibert Willaumez, born August 7, 1761, in Palais (Belle-Île) and died May 17, 1845, in Suresnes; An officer under the Empire of Napoleon Bonaparte.
The handwritten text: The sheet reproduces a historical quote and a facsimile of the admiral’s handwritten signature (“...and do not take me for an executioner. J. Willaumez").
The ship: At the bottom, the illustration depicts the “Amphisdrome Corvette proposed by Admiral Willaumez.” An amphidrome (or amphisdrome) vessel has the structural feature of being able to sail equally well forward or backward without having to tack.
Admiral Willaumez is also well known in naval history for having written the famous *Dictionnaire de marine*, published in 1820.
