A superb antique Hatchlou rug, dating from around 1920–1930, featuring a particularly rich and graphic traditional geometric design.

The rug is adorned with a beautiful composition of geometric motifs, diamonds, and stylized elements, in a warm color palette dominated by reds, browns, ecru, and dark blue. The overall effect highlights the decorative character and craftsmanship of antique nomadic rugs.

The Hatchlou rug (or Hatchlu, Hatschlu) is a unique traditional Oriental rug belonging to the Enssi (or Engsi) rug family. Historically woven by the nomadic Turkmen tribes of Central Asia, it was originally used as a door hanging for the entrance to yurts. Its main characteristics are distinguished by highly symbolic designs and robust craftsmanship: The Central Cross and Quadrant Pattern The most famous and distinctive feature of the Hatchlou is its central field, divided into four symmetrical quadrants separated by a wide vertical and horizontal band forming a cross. Each quadrant is filled with specific repetitive patterns:

• The “Y” or “candlestick” patterns: Rows of small, stylized geometric motifs typically fill the four panels.
• Rich Symbolism: Depending on the interpretation, the cross and the quadrants symbolize the structure of the yurt (the safety of the hearth) or represent the four inner gardens of the Islamic paradise.

100% Wool (the most classic): Traditionally, the pile, warp, and weft are made exclusively from pure, hand-spun sheep’s wool. The pile is moderately cut (neither too short nor too long)

• Condition: Good overall condition of the patterns and colors (beautiful patina). The fringes show normal wear and tear due to age. Minor restoration work has been done on the back of the fringe
