An early work by the artist, who was one of the pioneers of Fauvism in Belgium. His seascapes are extremely rare.

Louis François Joseph Marie Thévenet, 1874–1930, Belgian painter, watercolorist, and draftsman born in Bruges. He was the brother of the painter Pierre Thévenet and the opera singer Cécile Thévenet. Self-taught, he began his career as a sailor and held various jobs before giving it all up to pursue painting under the influence of his friend and mentor Auguste Oleffe. He spent several years with Oleffe in Nieuwpoort (1895–1902), and it was through Oleffe that he became involved with La Libre Académie and the L’Effort art circle. Upon returning to Brussels in 1903, he worked with Charles Dehoye. He held his first exhibitions at the Le Labeur art circle, of which he was a member, and at the La Libre Esthétique salon. In 1906, he met a patron, the brewer F. Van Haelen, thanks to whom he enjoyed a certain degree of financial security. He was then living in Uccle and became involved with the Brabant Fauves group, with whom he exhibited at the Giroux Gallery in 1913. James Ensor hailed him as the “Master Painter of the Delights of South Brabant.” Very quickly, at a time when plein air painting predominated, he revealed an original vision, painting intimate interiors imbued with a quiet poetry. His most productive period ended in 1914, the year he moved to Hal. There he led a life of moral and material hardship and died in solitude on August 16, 1930. Works are held in the museums of Antwerp, Brussels, and Ixelles. The artist is listed in Bénézit, Arto, and Piron. Listed on Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc...
