The Judgment Of Paris, Flemish School, Early 18th Century

The painting *The Judgment of Paris* is an elegant example of early 18th-century Flemish painting, following in the great tradition of the Old Masters. The work depicts one of the most famous episodes in ancient mythology—the choice of Paris, son of King Priam of Troy, who was tasked with determining which of the three goddesses—Hera, Athena, or Aphrodite—deserved the title of the most beautiful.

At the center of the composition, Paris is depicted seated under a tree as he hands the golden apple to Aphrodite, goddess of beauty and love. Aphrodite appears draped in a light, flowing garment, her face expressing grace and serene majesty. At her side stands Cupid with his quiver of arrows, emphasizing the scene’s romantic symbolism. Athena is depicted wearing her helmet and armor, the embodiment of wisdom and martial glory, while Hera, accompanied by the peacock—her traditional iconographic attribute—symbolizes power and royal dignity.

The composition reflects the influence of the artistic legacy of Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) and his followers. The rich palette of warm tones, the powerful contrasts of light and shadow, the dynamic gestures, and the sculptural rendering of the figures are characteristic of Flemish Baroque painting.

The emotional intensity of the Baroque, the sensual modeling of the human form, and the theatrical staging of space are combined here with the greater compositional clarity and decorative harmony characteristic of early 18th-century European painting.

Condition: Good collector’s condition. The canvas has been re-stretched; the paint layer is stable and exhibits even age-related craquelure as well as a noble patina of age. The original carved and gilded wooden frame shows natural signs of age, slight losses in the decoration, and darkening.

Provenance: Previously sold by the Neumeister auction house, Munich, Germany; subsequently held in a private European collection.
