Hélène Rivière Painting: Study Of The Sky Beach Seaside Waves Art Deco Seascape

The composition is dominated by the sky, which occupies nearly two-thirds of the surface and lends the entire scene a sense of vastness. Large swaths of gray, white, and pale blue are applied with remarkable freedom, allowing light to filter through the clouds. A few lighter patches enliven this expanse

The very low horizon line further accentuates this sense of space. The sea, rendered in a cool palette of gray-green, pale blue, and white, is crisscrossed by waves with dense foam, at times almost sculpted into the paint. On the right, a taller wave serves as a focal point in the composition and introduces a sweeping movement without disrupting the overall calm of the scene.

This free-flowing brushwork lends the work a subtle poetry. The deserted beach, the vibrant tones, the vast sky, and the clear swell combine to create a silent atmosphere, suspended between calm and movement. A painting of atmosphere and sensation: that of the air, the wind, the light, and the marine space. The simplicity of the motif and the restrained color palette give this study an intimate and contemplative presence.

This style is part of the tradition of plein air studies and seascapes from the first third of the 20th century. The simplification of forms, the composition using large blocks of color, the areas left unpainted on the canvas, and the freedom of brushwork also bring the work closer to modern figurative painting from the interwar period.
