"Accolay Vase With An Archaic Ram Design, Ceramic, 1960s, Vintage Brutalist Pottery"
Accolay – stoneware vase, signed, circa 1960, decorated with a stylized blue and brown ram. Cylindrical shape with a flared neck, decorated with turquoise and manganese slip on beige chamotte clay. The main motif depicts a stylized ram with a spiraled horn and striated neck, drawn with a free hand using a brown brush, within a blue geometric frieze. This formal language, reduced to essential graphic signs, recalls archaic animal representations: a cave drawing transposed into modernity. The totemic and parietal spirit here aligns with the taste of the 1950s and 60s for reinvented primitive symbols. The granular material, the mineral palette, and the spontaneity of the lines recall the freedom of the Accolay workshops founded by André Boutaud, Louis Dangon, Quilliot, and Slavic, pioneers of this post-war ceramic style, poised between craftsmanship and modernism. The vase encapsulates the raw and playful poetry characteristic of their creations: rigorous volume, naive decoration, and the depth of the matte glazes. Signed under the base, dated 1960. Very good condition, without cracks or restoration. An emblematic collector's piece from Accolay's production: rare for its animal decoration, immediately recognizable by its chamotte texture and turquoise-brown range. Both sculpture and vase, this object is a typical work from the group's most inventive period, which made Accolay a leading center for the renewal of French ceramics. Dimensions: 20 cm x 12 cm, EU/UK delivery €19.
