Artist: Georges Castaing

Notre-Dame de Paris et les bouquinistes, vue parisienne XXe

Oil on canvas signed Georges Castaing, depicting Notre-Dame de Paris as seen from the quays, with booksellers, a few passers-by and traffic still unobtrusive, in an urban scene full of calm. The painter doesn't treat the cathedral as an isolated monument: he inscribes it into the living fabric of the city, behind the trees, kiosks, silhouettes and gray light of a softly animated Paris. The composition is very skilful, with the mass of Notre-Dame in the background, the oblique line of the quay leading the eye towards the booksellers, and in the foreground a female figure in a green coat giving rhythm and presence to the whole.

The painting seduces with its balance between monument and everyday life. Georges Castaing avoids the overly descriptive or touristy view by partially drowning Notre-Dame in the foliage and life of the quay. The painter's opinion: this is precisely what makes the work so interesting. The cathedral remains the visual heart of the scene, but the real subject is also Paris as a lived-in landscape, with its promenades, kiosks, sidewalks and that slightly veiled atmosphere that gives the canvas an elegant, almost hushed charm. The palette of bluish grays, muted greens and small touches of red enliven the surface without harshness.

Georges Castaing was a French painter born in Villeneuve-sur-Lot in 1895 and died in 1971. Sources give him as a pupil of Lucien Jonas and Michel Dupuy; he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1930 to 1968, then at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1946, of which he became a member. The Centre national des arts plastiques also holds works by him, confirming a career well inscribed in the French artistic landscape of the twentieth century.

Good general condition of presentation. Canvas well stretched on its frame. Fresh, legible paint surface. More recent or reworked framing, with green and gilded decoration, with a few discreet marks of use.
