Charming Gilt and Polychrome Fragment of aBaroque Altarpiece.
A beautiful fragment from an early Baroque altar piece, of the type made notably for small private chapels during the 18thcentury.
This delightful carving forms a composition full of charm: a console supported by a painted wooden cherub, with green wings! Rising from the console is a tree with large gilt palms, forming a kind of canopy beneath which stands a walking saintly figure. He holds a staff in his right hand; his left hand would originally have held an attribute, now missing.
The carving, somewhat naïve in execution, has considerable presence. Gilding is superb,and polychromy delightfully naïve. The whole composition is a pleasure to behold.
Attributed provenance: Southern Germany.
Beautiful overall condition. Some old restoration may have taken place, although none is readily detectable upon ordinary examination.
A few old woodworm holes are present, with no apparentcurrent activity.
A remarkable condition for an object of this kind, and a rare surviving piece.
