Pocket Mirror By Mithé Espelt

Mithé ESPELT was born in 1923 in Lunel. She died there in 2020. A French ceramic artist, she studied drawing and sculpture in Montpellier alongside Pierre Soulage and Valentine Schelgel. She then learned the craft of ceramics under Emilie Decanis. After an apprenticeship in Paris, she opened her own studio in Lunel in 1946. There, she created jewelry, boxes, and mirrors. With little interest in recognition or posterity, Mithé Espelt never signed any of her works. Recognizable by their bold colors and playful shapes, her works are prized around the world. This pocket-sized stamped clay mirror from the 1950s is adorned with a red and green enameled motif, and the rim of the mirror is orange. It is adorned with a red ceramic bead hanging from a small chain.
