Jules DAUBEIL (Paris, 1839 – Paris, 1896) – *Landscape at Djara near Gabès*. Oil on canvas, 21.5 x 27 cm (39 x 45 cm with frame). Signed and inscribed lower left: "Jules Daubeil / Gabès". Inscribed and dated on the back of the stretcher: "Djara près Gabès / mars 1889". Fine 19th-century gilded wood frame. Very good condition. Towards the end of his career, Jules Daubeil painted Orientalist subjects in Tunisia, which he exhibited at the Paris Salon starting in 1891: *Mohammed-el-Hâag des Ouled-Trabelsi, Tunisie* (1891), *Tentes de nomades près Gabès (Tunisie)* (1892), and *Fête nègre à Tunis* (1896). Our painting, dated 1889 and set in Djara near Gabès, demonstrates that Daubeil was already painting Tunisian landscapes in the late 1880s. It is a fine sketch that possesses all the qualities of a major work, featuring beautiful light and a rich composition with numerous details that bring the landscape to life.
