A pair of gilded bronze statuettes on gray marble column bases, depicting Renaissance-inspired figures.
One depicts a bearded soldier with medium-length hair, holding a torch aloft in his left hand, his sword sheathed, and holding a scroll in his right hand, like an explorer. The other depicts a young peasant in simple clothing, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and resting, leaning on a cane.
These two figures have a historicizing character, contrasting their postures—one calm and the other more dynamic.
The identification of the soldier as Charles I in the sculpture of the soldier is not supported by any documentary sources.
Beautiful patina on the gilded bronze.
