The Crucifixion Of Jesus, Oil On Metal Plate, 19th Century, 12th Station Of The Cross

Artist: Non Signée
Our painting is a classical depiction of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ, in the style of religious art from the second half of the 19th century.
The painting is executed on a sheet of metal (not copper).
The scene depicts the 12th Station of the Cross (“Jesus Dies on the Cross”); it brings together several key figures from the biblical narrative around the cross:

Description of the Work
Main Subject : At the center of the composition, Jesus Christ, crowned with a golden halo, is crucified; the titulus “INRI” is inscribed at the top of the cross, above his head (Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum).,

The Virgin Mary; her hands clasped and wearing a golden halo, she stands to Christ’s right (to his left in the image), dressed in the traditional blue and red cloak and a white veil, her face etched with sorrow.

Saint Mary Magdalene; her hair loose, kneeling at the foot of the cross, she embraces and clings to the foot of the cross.

The Apostle Saint John; set back on the left, his face hidden by his hands to signify his grief.

Other figures of grieving holy women (such as Mary of Cleophas) and mourners complete the background, framing the scene on either side.

Medium: Oil painting on a metal plate, such as sheet metal or tinplate (frequently used for 19th-century devotional paintings).
This type of iconography was widely depicted in Europe by the Nazarene movement and reproduced in the form of altar paintings, oil paintings on sheet metal, or lithographs intended for churches and private devotions.
