Watercolour By Louis Chervin (1905–1969), ‘port Normand’ Or ‘harbour Busy With Sailing Ships’

We are offering this beautiful watercolor by the famous painter Louis Cherbin (1905–1969).
This work perfectly embodies the fluid, atmospheric style that characterizes this great landscape artist.
Work details: Watercolor on paper over pen and/or pencil lines, which remain clearly visible, lending a lively and spontaneous structure to the composition—typical of sketches made from life in the late 19th century or the first half of the 20th century.
Several masted ships (including those with traditional rigging) are moored in a harbor basin, their reflections cast upon the water in the foreground. On the right, one can make out a stone pier or wharf with a figure standing on it, as well as houses with architecture typical of the Channel or Atlantic coasts (such as the ports of Normandy or Brittany).
A favorite subject for the artist, who painted extensively along the coasts of the English Channel and northern France (such as Saint-Malo, Gravelines, and Petit-Fort-Philippe).
Here we see his recognizable style, combining precise pen-and-ink or pencil drawing—which defines the rigging of the sailboats—with broad, fluid watercolor washes to capture the shifting light of the sky and the reflections on the water.
Born in Paris, Louis Chervin began exhibiting at a very young age in the major Parisian art salons (such as the Salon des Indépendants as early as 1927).
He exhibited in Paris and was quickly noticed at the age of 17; an orphan at age 5, he had to leave school very early to earn a living and painted in his spare time without the guidance of any teacher.
In the 1930s, he was part of a group of painters called “La Horde de Montparnasse.” "In Montmartre, he knew everyone. He was particularly close to Gen Paul and André Utter, Suzanne Valadon’s husband, but also to Le Vigan, Marcel Aymé, and Céline, whom he likely met at Gen Paul’s home.
As an artist from Montmartre, his technical mastery and sensitivity to seascapes earned him the title of Official Painter of the Navy in 1957.

Louis Cherbin’s handwritten signature is located at the bottom left, accompanied by the date 1931.
