A rare anthropomorphic ceramic piece by Marie-Madeleine Jolly, circa 1950–60
This object is a rare and imposing anthropomorphic pitcher depicting a fisherman with a commanding presence, created by the studio of the famous French ceramicist Marie-Madeleine Jolly (1914–1963).
I have been unable to find any similar ceramics by the artist; this is most certainly a truly rare piece.
Working alongside her husband Philippe Madeline in their studio Le Tryskel (later the Madeline-Jolly studio), founded in 1951 in Villefranche-sur-Mer, she left her mark on the ceramics scene of the 1950s and 1960s on the French Riviera. The studio is particularly famous for its very close friendship and artistic collaboration with the poet Jean Cocteau, who produced his own terracotta pieces and “poem-objects” there.
With a potbellied figure, the sailor, his face adorned with a thick beard, smokes a pipe; he is dressed in his traditional sailor’s jacket and wears a suroît (waterproof hat); his pants are patched. He holds a fish suspended in his right hand.
Technique: Hand-modeled or cast terracotta with shades of satin and matte glazes in warm, ochre, and earthy tones, highly representative of the studio’s textural work.
Signature: This piece bears the incised signature “M.M. Jolly” on the underside of its base.
