Egyptomania - Engraving Of The Karnak Temple By Leon De Joannis, Gilded Wooden Empire-style Frame

Artist: Leon De Joannis
A beautiful antique engraving depicting a temple portal at Karnak, Egypt. The engraving is taken from the work of Léon de Joannis, a graduate of the École Polytechnique and a naval lieutenant, who took part in the 1831 expedition to Egypt to bring back the obelisk that now stands in the Place de la Concorde in Paris.  He left behind a travelogue, engravings, and watercolors—a unique record of one of the most extraordinary campaigns in Egypt. Our engraving is derived from this work. It is presented in a beautiful rectangular Empire-style frame with an oval viewing area, gilded with gold leaf and dating from the 1820s.

A lovely ensemble, a beautiful addition to complement an early 19th-century antique-style interior.

Good overall condition; the engraving has been trimmed to fit the frame, whose beautiful gilding has been cleaned and restored by our gilder.
