17th-century Stone Statue Of The Virgin In Prayer
A rare and significant 17th-century stone sculpture of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. The Virgin is depicted standing with her hands clasped in a prayerful pose. She is dressed in a long gown covered by a loose-fitting cloak that wraps around her body and falls in broad folds to the base. Her face, with its gentle and contemplative features, is framed by a veil covering her hair. At her feet lies the symbol of the serpent, a sign of the Immaculate Conception. The rendering of the drapery, with its deep, supple folds, as well as the overall composition, are characteristic of traditional religious sculpture. Various chips, wear, and small areas where the limestone is missing, likely due to exposure to the elements over time. Damage that can be restored.
