Thispair of vases features an elegant trumpet shape, consistingof a flared circular base, a bulging middle section, anda long neck that opens widely into a bell-shaped top. The variationin the crystal’s thickness accentuates the depth of itsruby-red color, which is particularly intense in the lower section.
Thedecoration, executed in enamel and gold, is organized intoseveral registers. The base is adorned with radiating motifs evokingstylized palmettes or feathers, while the body featuresa network of scrolls, broken lines, and Greek frets.Gilded friezes with oblique hatching highlight the mainarticulations of the silhouette. On the neck, suppleleafy stems punctuated by stylized flowers unfurl, their designcontinuing inside the opening. Finally, a gilded borderframes the rim of each vase.

Throughthe combination of geometric ornamentation andasymmetrical floral compositions, this pair reflects theJaponist style that developed in France during the lastthird of the 19th century. The contrast between the depth of the red crystaland the brilliance of the gold evokes the precious surfaces ofAsian lacquerware, reinterpreted according to the eclectic decorativevocabulary characteristic of French art of this period.

Foundedin Lorraine in 1764 with the authorization of Louis XV, the Baccaratglassworks turned to crystal production beginning in 1816.During the 19th century, the manufactory gainedinternational renown thanks to its royal commissions, its mastery ofcolored crystal, and its presentations at the World’sFairs. In the 1870s–1890s, its creations reflecteda marked interest in Japanese art, which its artisansadapted to the techniques of blown, engraved, enameled, andgilded crystal.
